Paragliding, waterfalls, forest trails, stargazing, and a mountain character that Lonavala has largely lost. Everything you need to plan a trip to Kamshet — from Pune, Mumbai, or anywhere.
Kamshet is a small town in the Maval taluka of Pune district, Maharashtra. It sits in the Sahyadri mountain foothills at 2,226 feet above sea level, along the Mumbai–Pune Expressway — the next major exit after Lonavala from Mumbai.
While Lonavala developed into a busy commercial hill station over the decades, Kamshet remained largely undisturbed. The Shirota Forest Reserve kept development in check. The paragliding community found the ridge thermals early and established the town's identity around that. The result is a place that still feels like a genuine Sahyadri village — clean air, open landscapes, morning mist, and the kind of quiet that becomes immediately obvious when you arrive.
Kamshet is not a resort town. There are no major malls, no hawker strip, no tiger fudge stalls. What it has instead: reliable paragliding conditions, waterfall access in monsoon, Sahyadri forest walking trails, and some of the least light-polluted night skies within 2 hours of Mumbai and Pune.
For weekend travellers from Mumbai and Pune, Kamshet offers the same Sahyadri mountain setting as Lonavala — and arguably a more authentic one — with a fraction of the footfall.
Kamshet is not a destination built around manufactured activities. What it offers instead is access to genuinely good outdoor experiences — most of them within 20 minutes of the town.
Kamshet has a railway station on the Mumbai–Pune line. Most visitors drive, but the train is often faster than driving on peak weekends — and considerably more relaxed.
From Hinjewadi / Wakad: Closer than central Pune — approximately 45–50 minutes. Take the Wakad bridge directly onto the Expressway.
Weekend driving tip: Leave before 8 AM on Saturday to avoid Expressway congestion. Return Sunday morning rather than evening for the same reason.
Recommended trains: Deccan Express, Indrayani Express, Pragati Express. The ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala is among the most scenic rail journeys in Maharashtra. Sit on the left side from Mumbai.
Unlike many hill destinations, Kamshet does not have a single obvious best season. Each period of the year offers something distinct — the honest answer is that it depends on what you're coming for.
Both destinations are in the same mountain range, on the same expressway, at similar elevations. The difference is entirely in character — and what happened to each of them over the past two decades.
Lonavala is not a bad destination — it's a heavily visited one. For day trips, it remains worthwhile. For a private overnight stay, the commercial character has largely overtaken the mountain character.
The 20-minute difference on the expressway is the only real cost of choosing Kamshet. The experience difference is substantially greater in return.
