About Kamshet

A hill town that
got left behind —
intentionally.

Kamshet is a small town in the Maval taluka of Pune district, Maharashtra. It sits in the Sahyadri mountain foothills at 2,226 feet above sea level, along the Mumbai–Pune Expressway — the next major exit after Lonavala from Mumbai.

While Lonavala developed into a busy commercial hill station over the decades, Kamshet remained largely undisturbed. The Shirota Forest Reserve kept development in check. The paragliding community found the ridge thermals early and established the town's identity around that. The result is a place that still feels like a genuine Sahyadri village — clean air, open landscapes, morning mist, and the kind of quiet that becomes immediately obvious when you arrive.

Kamshet is not a resort town. There are no major malls, no hawker strip, no tiger fudge stalls. What it has instead: reliable paragliding conditions, waterfall access in monsoon, Sahyadri forest walking trails, and some of the least light-polluted night skies within 2 hours of Mumbai and Pune.

For weekend travellers from Mumbai and Pune, Kamshet offers the same Sahyadri mountain setting as Lonavala — and arguably a more authentic one — with a fraction of the footfall.

Things to Do in Kamshet

More to do than
most people
expect.

Kamshet is not a destination built around manufactured activities. What it offers instead is access to genuinely good outdoor experiences — most of them within 20 minutes of the town.

🪂
Paragliding
5–10 min from town · Year-round
Kamshet is one of India's premier paragliding destinations. The Sahyadri ridge thermals above Shelar and Tower Hill are consistently reliable — certified instructors rate the site among the best flying conditions in Maharashtra. Tandem flights are available year-round for beginners. Solo pilots come from across India for training and cross-country flights. Cost: approximately ₹2,500–₹4,000 per tandem flight. Major operators: Nirvana Adventures, Temple Pilots, Indus Air.

💧
Kondeshwar Waterfall
15 min drive · Best Jun–Oct
A forest waterfall in the Sahyadri hills accessible via a short jungle trail. At peak monsoon (July–September) it runs strongly and the surrounding vegetation is at its most vivid green. Significantly less visited than the waterfalls near Lonavala. The trail itself is part of the appeal — through dense Sahyadri forest with good bird life. Best visited in the morning when light comes through the canopy.
🌲
Shirota Forest Walks
On the estate · Year-round
The Shirota Forest Reserve surrounds Kamshet and is accessible on foot via the Trikaya Retreat estate. The forest is dense, genuinely quiet, and rich in bird life — particularly in the early hours. Common sightings include Malabar whistling thrush, crested serpent eagle, and various kingfishers during monsoon. The trail network is moderate difficulty and suitable for most walkers. No guide required for the main trail.
🌊
Kundhalika Lake
10 min drive · Year-round
A peaceful reservoir lake near Kamshet, overlooked by most visitors in favour of busier Pawna Lake. Kundhalika is considerably quieter — a good choice for a morning walk, photography, or simply sitting by water. The birdlife around the lake is excellent, especially at dawn and dusk. Dogs are welcome and the open shoreline makes it a favourite with pet owners staying nearby.
🔭
Stargazing
From anywhere in Kamshet · Oct–Feb best
At 2,226 ft with minimal light pollution, Kamshet offers genuinely good dark-sky conditions by urban standards. The Milky Way is visible from open ground on clear nights between October and February. No telescope required — just getting away from the town's minimal lighting and allowing your eyes to adjust. The absence of city glow from Mumbai or Pune is immediately apparent on a clear winter night here.
🏛️
Kondeshwar Temple
20 min drive
An ancient Shiva temple built beside a stream in dense forest — considerably older than most of the accommodation in the region. The temple itself is architecturally modest, but the setting is exceptional: forest, flowing water, silence. Worth an hour on any visit to Kamshet. The drive through the Maval countryside to reach it is genuinely scenic. Combine with Kondeshwar Waterfall for a half-day excursion.
🧘
Yoga & Slow Living
On property at Trikaya Retreat
Kamshet's character lends itself to the slower end of travel — mornings spent with tea and open views, afternoons walking the estate, evenings by a fire. Trikaya Retreat offers yoga on the property. Many guests find the value in doing very little deliberately — the altitude, clean air, and absence of city noise are the experience.
🏔️
Lonavala Day Trip
20 min drive
Staying in Kamshet and visiting Lonavala as a day trip is the ideal combination. Tiger's Leap viewpoint, Bhushi Dam (excellent in monsoon), Rajmachi trek starting point, Karla and Bhaja Caves — all accessible within 30 minutes. Get the Lonavala experience without staying there and returning to the quiet of Kamshet in the evening.
🔥
Bonfire Evenings
On property · On request
Kamshet's winter evenings — December through February — are cool enough that a bonfire goes from pleasant to essential. At 2,226 ft the temperature drops noticeably after sunset. A bonfire on the private cottage grounds, with the Sahyadri ridgeline visible and no ambient light pollution to dull the stars, is one of the defining Kamshet experiences that simply isn't available at a Lonavala resort.
How to Reach Kamshet

Easier to reach
than most people
assume.

Kamshet has a railway station on the Mumbai–Pune line. Most visitors drive, but the train is often faster than driving on peak weekends — and considerably more relaxed.

🚂
By Train
Mumbai & Pune
From Mumbai: ~2 hrs · From Pune: ~75 min
  • From Mumbai CST or Dadar — any Pune-bound express
  • From Pune Junction — same line toward Mumbai
  • Deboard at Kamshet railway station
  • Auto-rickshaw from station to destination: ~10 min, ~₹150–200

Recommended trains: Deccan Express, Indrayani Express, Pragati Express. The ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala is among the most scenic rail journeys in Maharashtra. Sit on the left side from Mumbai.

Best Time to Visit Kamshet

Good in every
season — differently.

Unlike many hill destinations, Kamshet does not have a single obvious best season. Each period of the year offers something distinct — the honest answer is that it depends on what you're coming for.

Jun – Sep
Monsoon
Green & alive.
The Sahyadri hills turn electric green. Kondeshwar waterfall runs at full strength. Morning mist fills the valley. Shirota Forest is at its most vivid. The landscape is genuinely spectacular — the most visually dramatic season of the year.

Kamshet vs Lonavala

The honest
comparison.

Both destinations are in the same mountain range, on the same expressway, at similar elevations. The difference is entirely in character — and what happened to each of them over the past two decades.

Lonavala
The classic choice —
now heavily trafficked.
  • 83 km from Mumbai, 65 km from Pune — the closest hill destination for both cities
  • Heavily commercialised: roadside stalls, large resorts, significant weekend crowds
  • Peak weekend traffic jams on the expressway and through town are common
  • Viewpoints (Tiger's Leap, Bhushi Dam) are genuine attractions — but crowded
  • Accommodation is predominantly large shared resorts
  • Good for day trips; challenging for the "quiet mountain escape" experience

Lonavala is not a bad destination — it's a heavily visited one. For day trips, it remains worthwhile. For a private overnight stay, the commercial character has largely overtaken the mountain character.

Kamshet
Same mountains.
Different experience.
  • 20 minutes further on the same expressway — the next exit from Mumbai
  • Minimal commercial development — no hawker strip, no major resorts
  • A fraction of Lonavala's weekend footfall despite similar proximity
  • India's premier paragliding destination — gives it a distinct identity beyond "hill station"
  • Private accommodation options with fully exclusive stays available
  • Lonavala is 20 minutes away as a day trip — best of both worlds

The 20-minute difference on the expressway is the only real cost of choosing Kamshet. The experience difference is substantially greater in return.

Everything you
need to know about
Kamshet.

Kamshet is best known as a paragliding destination — one of India's premier sites with consistent Sahyadri thermals year-round. The additional 20 minutes of driving is widely considered worthwhile.

Yes. At 2,226 ft with minimal light pollution, Kamshet offers genuine dark-sky conditions relative to nearby cities. The Milky Way is visible from open ground on clear nights, particularly October through February. This is one of the distinguishing features of staying in Kamshet versus Lonavala, where ambient lighting from the town and resorts significantly reduces night sky quality.
